Underpinnings of explicit phonetic imitation: perception, production, and variability

چکیده

This work tests the relative role of perception- and production-based predictors, relationship between them, in imitation artificial accents varying voice onset time (VOT), using a paradigm designed to target distinct sub-processes imitation. We examined how explicit sentences differing systematically (VOT) was influenced by type VOT manipulation (lengthened vs. shortened) presence absence voice-related variability exposure. In contrast previous work, participants imitated shortened as well lengthened VOT, albeit with both qualitative quantitative differences across two types. The inhibited imitation, but this inhibition mitigated preceding session no (i.e., were acoustically identical except for VOT). then tested extent which individual performance on accent task related three other tasks: 1) discrimination accents, 2) words isolation drawn from continuum, 3) these same words. Performance word-level task, not independently predictive Results are consistent conceptualization sum automatic phonetic convergence processes overlaid distinct, controlled perceptual articulatory factors that pattern differently individuals. Phonetic should be considered monolithic skill, models predicting variation imitative ability must consider only potential sources variability, also at what level exert their influence.

Perception, production, and imitation of time ratios by skilled musicians.

We have described our exploration of the judgment, production, and imitation of fractions of a beat by skilled musicians, illustrating our findings with data from violinist and conductor Paul Zukofsky. For small fractions we found systematic and substantial errors. In the judgment task small stimulus fractions are associated with names that are too large (overestimation). In both production and...

Specificity and generalizability of spontaneous phonetic imitation

The imitation paradigm [1, 2], in which subjects' speech is compared before and after they are exposed to target speech, has shown that subjects shift their production in the direction of the target, indicating the use of episodic traces in speech perception as well as the close tie between speech perception and production. By using this paradigm, the current study aims to investigate the psych...

Production and perception of a novel, second-language phonetic contrast.

Four experiments, all of which focused on vowel duration, assessed Chinese subjects' production and perception of the contrast between /t/ and /d/ in the final position of English words. Vowel duration was measured in minimal pairs in the first experiment. The stimuli in natural-edited beat-bead and bat-bad continua in which vowel duration varied in 20-ms steps were then presented to native Eng...

Spontaneous and explicit speech imitation

The single word speech shadowing task typically produces spontaneous imitation of the speech of the shadowed talker (the model). This task has been used as a tool for examining speech convergence in a non-social setting and has provided data for claims that the mental lexicon is constituted from instance-based exemplars. We examined whether the speech of participants who shadowed or explicitly ...
